Tris Hydrochloride/TRIS-HCL is a stabilizing buffer in biological applications such as electrochromatography, UV analysis and HPLC. It is used to adjust and stabilize the pH ranges for gels used in electrophoresis applications. Tris Hydrochloride is extensively used as a biological buffer or a component of buffer solutions.

Tris Hydrochloride/TRIS-HCL CAS 1185-53-1 is commonly used as a buffer component of phenol extraction of DNA or RNA and a buffering component of separating and stacking gels in the characterization of protein products by SDS-PAGE. Tris Hydrochloride has also been used with urea as a method for antigen retrieval in immunohistochemistry. In smooth muscles Tris Hydrochloride has been observed to inhibit motor responses to adrenergic motor nerve stimulation. In the crystalization of porcine pancreatic elastase with use of Tris Hydrochloride, the Tris Hydrochloride buffer was observed to induce conformational change and crystal-packing contraction. Tris Hydrochloride has also been incorporated in coelomic fluid and in Cortland medium to store unfertilized rainbow trout eggs. Tris Hydrochloride is also known as Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane hydrochloride and Tris HCl.
